We both moved on, I gave him my word that you will have hundred per cent commitment from me on the field. After that, we've had some amazing partnerships, and we've continued to be good friends.
We had closed the chapter there and then once the match was over. Talking about incidents from your life, there was a time when you waited for forty minutes for Anjali. This was back when we were were not married. Those days there were no mobile phones, and you had to time exactly how to meet. I reached Anjali's house, and she wasn't there. So I had to drive back all the way to Bandra, make a phone call to tell her I would reach her house again in forty minutes, and then drive back to meet her.
Yes, because I was not prepared to tell my parents that I wanted to marry now, I wasn't ready to face my brothers and sisters. Your family has always played a pivotal role in your life. There is an incredible story about the golf ball and your aunt. I was eleven years old and I had a golf ball that was oval shaped. I made my aunt sit in a chair on one side of the room and throw the ball at me.
The ball would fly off the bat and I realised that this played a part in how I learnt to use soft hands while batting.

Tell us more about that time when you were captain and you did not get the team of your choice. I wanted certain players as the captain but didn't get them, and I was upset at that. It is important to get the team you want to be able to lead as captain, and an understanding between the captain and team selectors is required. There was a lack of transparency and understanding.
Ian Chappell had said I should look at myself in the mirror, where he had no business questioning my commitment. My batting hero Vivian Richards had then called me to say that I should not retire. I had a couple of really good seasons after that. I even became the ICC cricketer of the year in Then once I bumped in Ian, and he praised me then.
I told him he conveniently switches sides as it suits him. Again, he was very clear that he had to mention almost every person who has helped him over the years irrespective of who they are. His humility and modesty are traits I have come to admire during the writing process. What kind of pressure was it on you to bring out Sachin's story given the humongous and varied expectations around it?
How'd you handle it? You had to shut yourself in a zone and just do your job. He kept telling me that I just had to give my best and not think of anything else. He said it was like preparing for a key series. The result is not something I needed to think about. It is not a book meant to appease anyone. It is Sachin's life in his own words, which he wanted his fans to read and enjoy.
What kind of reactions have you got about the book? The book is already the talk of the town and is smashing records like there were none. Did you expect this? You have answered the question yourself. Do I say more? The reaction is unbelievable. It has created publishing history. It is proof of Sachin's stature as India's most loved icon.
I am humbled by the way Sachin's fans have reacted to it. I have received thousands of messages and calls, which is truly overwhelming. Sachin says that it took a lot of convincing from your side to make him write an autobiography. How hard was it for you to get him to agree? He is a person who will not do something unless he is percent convinced.
I kept telling him that the book is important for posterity. It is through the prism of the man's career that we can best understand contemporary India. Who better than Sachin? It had to be done. And the sooner the better. I must mention Anjali Tendulkarfor she was extraordinary supportive of the idea. And during the writing process our common friend, Aparna Santhanam who helped me immensely during the editing stage played a key role.
This book will be his legacy when none of us are around. Once he realised that it was important he was fully committed to it. Was there any part of the book that you would have liked to be better? There can never be a perfect history. You always strive for perfection and excellence. That's our nature. Having said that we are both very very satisfied with what we have.
